ABOUT BABY MELODY:Save the Chimps does not believe in captive breeding, however, Melody's birth is a result of a failed vasectomy. Most chimps do not have children until they are near the age of 14. Her mother, Megan, only eight years old, rejected Melody at birth. Perhaps due to her young age, her history or for reasons unknown to us Megan showed no interest in her new daughter, even refusing to touch her. As a result, the care staff of Save the Chimps was required to care for Melody on a 24 hour basis, very similar to a human infant. This forced the staff to intervene and raise Melody until adoptive chimp parents could be found.
In the video below, you will see "Mel's" adoptive parents Ron and April. Mel had met almost every chimp at the sanctuary, but her strongest connection seemed to be with Ron and April. First, Mel interacted with Ron and April through a barrier under close supervision. Ron and April could not have been gentler, and even groomed Mel through the mesh barrier. The next step was for Mel to meet Ron and April face to face without any barrier: and as hoped, Ron and April were loving and patient with young Mel. Mel was released onto Ron and April's island during August 2008, taking her first step towards April, her new mom, who then picked her up and carried her away. Melody will never know isolation, pain and medical experimentation; she is on of the lucky few captive chimpanzees. Watch Melody with her adoptive parents April and Ron as she learns a new mode of transportation:
